Gallery – Landscapes

Clarence Bicknell is mostly known for his botanical watercolours like the Alpine flowers in the vellum-bound albums. Throughout his life he used a pocket sketchbook to record in ink, pencil or watercolour the scenes that he saw; he executes them in a direct style without the ornaments or floral borders which typify much of his botanical work. On most of them he writes the date and the place, invaluable for our logging of the timeline of his life and travels. Among the earliest is his watercolour of St Peter’s Church, Stoke-on-Tern, in 1870 when he first arrived; the church was still being built. He continued to paint landscapes till the last year of his life.

This gallery of landscapes was put together by Marcus Bicknell in May 2026 as a guide to the organisers of Le Venezie International Watercolour festival as which Clarence’s work will be exhibited.
