Walter Mey signed the Casa Fontanalba Visitors’ Book on 23rd August 1906, page 3. Who was this gentleman? Can you help us identify him?
Clarence did not know! He write in the Book of Guests in Esperanto “Walter Mey, of Berlin. About this gentleman I only know that he arrived late in the evening, with a letter from a friend in S. Dalmazzo who asked that I find him lodging in V. Casterino. Of course, lodging didn’t exist; so he dined, slept, breakfasted with us, and then disappeared, leaving his autograph in my book of visitors.”
I have been able to trace a Walter Mey in Berlin and Brasunschweig, probably a high school teacher. Most relevant is the fact that Walter Mey was a watercolourist. His “Bucht mit drei Anglern” (Bay with Three Anglers) achieved the sum of €10 at auction in 2007…
Can we assume that he was just a German school teacher with a love of nature and art who got lucky for the night? Probably.
Elisabetta Massardo responded after my initial posting here “I see that (see page 179 of Marvels) there was the Congress of Esperanto at Geneva – from 28 Aug. 1906 to 6 Sept.- where Clarence went with Luigi and Mercede. I wonder when they left Casterino. May be they left Casterino in the early morning of 24th August when Mey was still asleep in the cottage and the fact that Mey disappeared was told to Clarence on his return to Casa Fontanalba. I’m guessing of course. Or, as Clarence didn’t know German and Mey perhaps didn’t know either English or Italian they couldn’t understand each other. Strange is that Clarence doesn’t say whether Mey was young or not.”

Verbunden mit der Geschichte der Familie Resch ist auch die Geschichte der Schule Woringen. 1911 wurde sie gegründet und die Kinder unseres Dorfes und des benachbarten Guddaschen (Freienfelde) brauchten dann nicht mehr jeden Tag den weiten Weg bis zur Schule nach Sakalehnen (Falkenort) zurücklegen. Durch Umbau einiger Zimmer wurden auf dem einen Ende des großen Wohnhauses im Parterre ein Klassenzimmer und darüber die Wohnung des Lehrers eingerichtet… Lehrer Walter Mey lebt heute in Braunschweig, Lehrer Max Preuß in Wolfsburg und Lehrer Kurt Domscheit in Domersleben Kreis Wanzleben bzw. Magdeburg (russische Zone).
Von 1911 bis 1928 waren Walter Mey und Max Preuß Lehrer in dieser Schule.
